I have never been good at exploring my own backyard. I have always found other countries and cultures much more interesting. It’s only the past year or so, that we have started digging into our own little country. I blame it on the weather, because honestly; when I’m off work I’m craving sunshine! And even though that’s not a guarantee anywhere, then the odds are quite better in the Mediterranean than in Denmark.
A 24-hour get-away
Last week I had a weekend planned with some girlfriends. We originally talked about some days in Lisbon, but things came in our way and we ended up doing a 24-hour trip to the town of Tisvilde an hour north of Copenhagen. Is was AMAZING! Amazing in the way that 24 hours away with the girls gives an incredible boost of energy and amazing because the place was just stunning. Tisvilde is the prettiest little paradise with a mix of tiny beach houses, forests, steep hills and small shops. It is definitely worth a visit if you wish to unwind during a Copenhagen holiday.
Helenekilde Badehotel
We stayed at the beautiful seaside hotel Helenekilde Badehotel (affiliate link). The place is super charming with gorgeous interior and attention to detail (they offer wellies in all sizes in case you come on a rainy day and forgot to bring your wellies from home! I love that little detail).
We booked a package in advance including afternoon tea, 3-course dinner in the evening and breakfast. We paid aprox. DKK 3700,- for the three of us. Everything worked perfectly fine and the staff on-site were very welcoming (especially the reception staff were extremely kind). My only negative comment would be that the breakfast buffet could have been better. It was almost ripped when we arrived 45 minutes before closure. It was such a shame because the produce was very delicious, but the presentation was messy and in lack of some things.
Some visuals
The area
The area is a nice mix of beach, forest and a little main street with some shops. It is a summer paradise, so there is much more going on in the summer season. However a fall escape is definitely recommendable too as there is nothing better than a fresh walk on the beach or in the forest and then snuggle up with a coffee inside afterwards.
Things to do
- Long walks on the beach and in the forest
- Shopping or simply hopping around the small shops (mostly interior and clothes)
- Take the car and visit the unique farms and shops in the area. Eg. The Farm or Esthers Garage
- Relax, read a book in the sofas and enjoy the silence and the view
